Finding a Way to Celebrate a Faith-Filled Life

Posted by Diane Davis on

How do you honor the life and faith of a loved one in a fashion that mirrors a non-conventional life?

Becky Edwards was searching for a way to celebrate the life of her mother, Kathryn McRoberts, who had a steadfast and inspiring faith, yet was not one for traditional memorial ceremonies. She allowed God to show the way…and ultimately, the timing.

During the period of her mother's battle with Alzheimer's Disease and physical decline, Becky's daughter Grace asked Becky to join the Chancel Choir as an activity they could participate in together. Becky found the experience, the choir community and especially the music, to be of great comfort.

After her mother's passing, she was inspired to celebrate her mother's life through music and approached Christ Church Director of Music Ministries, Dan Blosser with the idea to commission an original choral piece in honor of her mother Kathryn McRoberts.

Dan suggested approaching Elaine Hagenberg, one of the most widely performed female choral composers in the country. Becky recalled a song of Elaine's that she and Grace sang during their time together in Chancel Choir and how it reminded them of her mother. She knew it would be a great fit and was thrilled when Elaine agreed to do it.

The results of their efforts, Deep Peace, was scheduled to be performed in March of 2020. Unfortunately, the church went to online-only worship services due to COVID before it could be shared. On October 17, 2021  - over nineteen months past the original debut date  - the Christ Church Chancel Choir will be performing Deep Peace. We invite you to join us at either the 9 or 11:15 am service to experience it.
